Playpen

FAQ

Questions people ask

Is Playpen free?

Playpen itself is free. Local mode needs no account and costs nothing. Claude mode and Hybrid mode use your own Claude subscription: Claude Code needs a paid Claude plan (Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise) or an API account, and the free Claude plan doesn’t include it. Playpen doesn’t add a charge on top.

Does it work offline?

Yes, in Local mode, once Playpen has finished its first-time setup. That setup needs the internet. Claude mode needs the internet. Sending a game to your phone works over your home Wi‑Fi, and your phone and PC need to be on the same network.

Where do my games live?

In a Playpen folder in your user folder on your own computer, with one folder per project. They’re not uploaded anywhere.

Can I sell what I make?

It’s your project and Playpen doesn’t claim it. But games can include free art, sound and music packs that come with their own licences, and Playpen lists credits for them. We can’t give legal advice, so check those licences before you sell something.

Which AI does it use?

Two kinds. A local model that runs on your computer through Ollama, which Playpen picks to fit your PC, and Claude, through Claude Code. In Hybrid mode both work on the same project.

What can it make?

Real games, such as platformers, shooters and racing games, and small apps. It sets up the project, writes the code, adds sound and music, and lets you test it right away.

Does it run on Mac or Linux?

Not yet. Playpen is Windows only for now.

Is it safe for kids?

There is a PIN-protected Child Lock, with honest limits. The For parents page explains both.

Why does Windows warn me about the installer?

Because the installer isn’t code-signed yet. The Download page shows the exact steps to continue, and a checksum so you can verify the file.
